Humanism is the view that meaning, purpose, values, morality, identity, and social order are shaped by human beings through reason, experience, and empathy, rather than assigned by divine authority, natural law, cosmic destiny, or other transcendent sources.
Holistic Humanism is a framework for living well by integrating body, heart, mind, beliefs, values, will, and expression, and by navigating life's tensions with awareness, care, and responsibility across the inner self, relationships, communities, and the wider world.
Humans are free to create the life they want. They create meaning, purpose, values, morality, identity, and social order that fit their goals and style of life best.
But first, they need to see what they're actually choosing — and what it costs. Holistic Humanism is a framework designed to help with that choice.
Holistic Humanism is a practical model for human living, built on humanist foundations. We grow, mature, and learn throughout life. This model helps by organizing human life into four layers: Self, Close Relationships, Community, and Shared World.
This is not a recreation of reality, but a practical map — simplified to help us navigate a complex life.
Part I: The Self
"Who am I?"
The most intimate territory — just you, with yourself. This layer explores the inner foundations of a human life: how you feel, think, believe, choose, create, and live in your body. Before we can understand our relationships, communities, or place in the world, we must first understand ourselves.
How do I inhabit my physical existence?
Everything else in your life runs on this. Health, energy, sleep, movement, sensation, pain, aging, sexuality — the body is not a vehicle. It is you. The body is the most important domain to care for. It houses everything else.
How do I feel and connect emotionally?
The heart is the domain of feeling: love, grief, empathy, shame, trauma, mood, and emotional regulation. It asks how emotions shape our lives, our relationships, and our capacity for beauty, depth, and wonder.
How do I think and know?
We navigate reality through attention, logic, memory, and curiosity — but our understanding is often distorted by bias and mental habits. This domain explores how humans build reliable knowledge, how we approach what we do not yet know, and how to face the gap between what you think you know and what you actually know.
What do I assume to be true about reality?
This domain explores how we build worldviews: what we think we know, what we question, and what we believe beyond proof. Through reason, experience, faith, doubt, ritual, and meaning, it asks what we can know, what we cannot know, and what we choose to believe.
How do I create, enjoy, and express?
The domain of expression includes creativity, art, humor, play, craft, imagination, beauty, and sensory pleasure. It is where inner life becomes visible — through what we make, enjoy, share, and bring into the world.
What do I hold to be worth caring about?
Values are what you consider worth protecting, pursuing, sacrificing for, and refusing to betray. They shape your moral priorities, your conscience, and the lines you will not cross. Values take shape in the choices you make.
How do I direct my life and persist?
This domain explores agency, intention, discipline, courage, decision-making, and resilience. It asks how we choose a direction, stay with what matters, and continue shaping life despite resistance, uncertainty, and difficulty.
What emerges when I see all of this together?
This is where the parts begin to form a whole: self-concept, personal narrative, authenticity, and boundaries. It is the space between who I am, who I have been, and who I am becoming. Identity is not a separate domain — it is what emerges when everything else is seen together.
Part II: Close Relationships
"How do I love and connect?"
This layer turns from the inner self toward the people closest to us — the ones we love, depend on, struggle with, and are changed by. It explores how we bond, share meaning, build trust, support one another, and face conflict without losing ourselves or each other.
How do I bond?
Attachment is the domain of closeness: romantic love, friendship, kinship, mentorship, and the ties that draw us toward one another. It explores who we let in, how we hold on, how we let go, and what it means to belong in another person's life.
How do I share meaning?
Communication is the domain of speaking, listening, expression, and misunderstanding. It explores how we try to make ourselves known, how others receive us, and why the gap between intention and understanding matters so much.
Who can I rely on?
Trust is built through loyalty, honesty, vulnerability, consistency, and repair. We explore how trust is earned, tested, broken, and sometimes rebuilt — and why so much of close relationship depends on it.
How do I nurture and receive nurture?
Care is the domain of support, presence, sacrifice, empathy, and burden-sharing. It explores how we help one another, how we allow ourselves to be helped, and what it means to carry responsibility with love.
How do I navigate difference with people I love?
Conflict is the domain of disagreement, hurt, boundaries, negotiation, and repair. It explores when to confront, when to yield, when to forgive, and when preserving yourself matters more than preserving the bond.
How do my closest people shape who I become?
This is where close relationships begin to form a relational self: who I am in love, friendship, family, trust, care, and conflict. It is the space between being myself and being changed by those I let close. The self does not disappear in relationship — but it is always shaped by it.
Part III: The Community
"Where do I belong?"
This part turns from close relationships toward groups — the circles, communities, and shared identities that shape how we live together. Here we explore belonging, culture, cooperation, roles, and the question of how to find our place among others.
Who are my people?
Belonging is about finding where you are recognized, welcomed, and understood. It explores shared identity, inclusion, exclusion, loyalty, and the question of where you truly fit.
What stories and norms surround me?
Culture is the atmosphere we grow inside — made of traditions, symbols, language, rituals, and invisible rules. It quietly shapes what we value, how we behave, and how we imagine the world.
How do we act together?
This is the work of building together — through coordination, compromise, shared purpose, and mutual support. It asks how people move from separate wills toward common action.
What position do I hold in this group?
Every group has roles, expectations, and patterns of respect. This explores who leads, who follows, who belongs at the center or the edge, and how place is shaped by choice, ability, inheritance, or circumstance.
What role do I play in the groups I belong to?
This is where community life begins to gather into a larger sense of place: where I belong, what I contribute, and what others come to expect from me. It is the meeting point between fitting in, standing out, and becoming someone within a shared world.
Growth does not end with understanding yourself. At some point, what matters must move beyond the individual and become shared life.
Build communities around what you care about. That is how values begin to take root in the world.
Part IV: The Shared World
"What structures shape us all?"
This part turns from communities toward the wider systems that shape every human life — whether we chose them or not. Here we explore nature, economy, governance, technology, and history: the larger forces that shape how we live together and what kind of world we inherit.
What is my relationship to the living planet?
Nature is the living world that makes all human life possible — land, climate, ecosystems, animals, food, and the conditions we depend on to survive. It asks how we live within the natural world, how we use it, how we care for it, and what responsibility comes with being part of it.
How do resources and labor flow?
The economy shapes how work, money, ownership, risk, and opportunity move through society. It explores how people make a living, how wealth and hardship are distributed, and how economic systems shape both freedom and constraint.
How are we ruled — and how do we fight over it?
Governance is about rules, rights, institutions, justice, and the struggle over who makes decisions for society. It explores law, democracy, power, accountability, protest, and the ongoing tension between order, freedom, and collective responsibility.
What tools extend and constrain us?
This is about the human-made systems that expand our abilities while also shaping our habits, relationships, and limits. It asks how tools influence freedom, connection, efficiency, dependence, and the texture of everyday life.
What past shapes our present?
History is the inherited world behind the one we live in — made of memory, trauma, progress, legacy, and unfinished consequences. It explores how the past continues to shape identity, institutions, opportunity, conflict, and the stories people tell about who they are.
How do I live within a world much larger than myself?
This is where the shared world comes into view as a whole: the systems, inheritances, and conditions that shape every human life. Responsibility begins here — in recognizing that how I live affects not only my own life, but the world others must live in too.
This framework is not here to tell you what to think. It is here to help you notice where you are, see the tensions you are living in, and orient yourself more consciously — either by deepening your clarity in the position you hold, or by finding your way toward a new one.
